Meta suspends AI characters for teens amid safety concerns
Meta Platforms has decided to temporarily suspend access to its AI characters for teenage users worldwide across Facebook, Instagram and other apps, according to Reuters. The company said the restriction will take effect within the next few weeks and remain in place until a new, updated experience is rolled out.
Meta announced the move in a blog post on teen safety, noting that the upcoming update will include enhanced parental control features to help guardians monitor and manage teenagers' AI-related activities. Once launched, the new system will allow parents greater oversight of how teens interact with AI tools.
In October last year, Meta announced parental controls to disable private chats between teens and AI characters, following criticism over "overly intimate" AI interactions. However, the company admitted those features have not yet been implemented.
Meta said future AI experiences for teens will follow PG-13-style content guidelines. The decision comes amid growing regulatory scrutiny over the impact of AI chatbots on young users in the US and other countries.
