CHITTAGONG, Jun 18: The police in the port city sealed a cold storage with 150 tonnes of date-expired date and raisin worth about Tk 200 million at the Reazuddin Bazar, the city's largest retail market.
The date of import of the food items could not be learnt as the packing list of the goods was scratched by the importer. The police were yet to identify the importer of the goods, police said.
The food items were supposed to be supplied to the city's retail markets during this Ramadan as the demand for those foods runs high on the occasion.
Additional deputy commissioner (detective branch) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police SM Tanvir Arafat said acting on a tip-off the DB police conducted the raid at Reazuddin Bazar Friday afternoon in presence of executive magistrate of the district administration Ashraful Alam.
They seized 12,000 cartons of dates and 3000 cartons of raisin from the cold storage called ETAC. Each carton has 10 kilograms. The estimated price of the items was Tk 200 million (20 crore), police said.
The owner of the cold storage is Raonak Jahan, police said. The dates and raisin were imported back in 2012.
