CHITTAGONG, May 31 (BSS): Participants at a roundtable here demanded to increase 50 per cent taxes on all kinds of tobacco goods in the upcoming national budget for 2014-2015 fiscal year to discourage tobacco consumption in the country.
Terming tobacco the biggest human killer, they said every sixth adult death is being caused by tobacco in Bangladesh where 42 per cent are consuming cigarettes, bidi, smokeless or other tobacco products.
Jugantor Samaj Unnyon Sangstha (JSUS) organised the roundtable on the occasion of World Tobacco Day on "Say No To Tobacco" with representatives of trade organisations at Nasirabad in the city on Saturday.
The speakers said the youths are the future of the country but the tobacco users are increasing every year in the country among the youths and tobacco-related diseases are also increasing every year. The meeting also stressed on creating awareness among people against the harmful impacts of tobacco.
With JSUS Executive Director Yesmin Parvin in the chair, social worker Saidul Amin, Shahidul Islam, Arifur Rahman among others addressed the function.
