JAMALPUR, July 16 (BSS): Aus paddy cultivation here has been increasing as the farmers are interested to earn extra profit from the crop.
Many farmers in the district after harvesting BRRI-28, a short duration variety, cultivated Aus paddy of BRRI-48 variety and Nerica variety.
Agriculture Department said BRRI-48 is a latest variety of Aus having drought tolerance and is high yielding.
On the other hand, Nerica is a short duration and drought tolerant variety. Farmers could harvest the paddy after 90 to 100 days of plantation.
The variety also requires less irrigation. As a result farmers like to cultivate the varieties for extra profit.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, 2,104 hectares of land have been brought under Aus cultivation this year which is 496 hectares more than the last year Aus cultivation.
Farmers have planted HYV Aus paddy on 1,329 hectares and local variety on 775 hectares.
Besides, the Agriculture department also took an incentive programme on Aus cultivation. Under the programme 500 farmers got Aus seeds and fertilizers free of cost.
The Agriculture department said Aus paddy was cultivated on 15 hectares of land in sadar upazila, 4 hectares in Sarishabari upazila, 165 hectares in Melandah upazila, 250 hectares in Madarganj upazila, 890 hectares in Islampur upazila, 600 hectares in Dewanganj upazila and 180 hectares in Bakshiganj upazila.
The office said per hectare production target of HYV is 2.52 tonnes and local 1.30 tonnes.
