Corporation (BADC) has been strengthening irrigation infrastructure across the country to support agricultural productivity, expanding both surface- and groundwater-based irrigation systems.
During the 2024-25 irrigation season, BADC provided irrigation coverage for about 565,000 hectares of land nationwide, says a press statement.
At present, around 95 per cent of irrigated land is covered by small-scale irrigation systems, while large-scale irrigation accounts for about 5 per cent. In terms of water sources, 27.93 per cent of irrigation depends on surface water, while 72.07 per cent relies on groundwater.
Over the past decade, BADC has carried out extensive irrigation and water-management works across the country.
These include the excavation and re-excavation of about 13,665 kilometres of canals, construction of 14,637 kilometres of underground irrigation channels and 3,610 kilometres of above-ground channels, and development of 321 kilometres of crop-protection embankments.
BADC has set targets to raise irrigation efficiency to 38-40 per cent by 2030, increase the share of surface-water irrigation to 30 per cent, and reduce dependence on groundwater to 70 per cent.
