NARSINGDI, May 12 (BSS): Cultivation of melon (Bangi) is gaining popularity in the district due to its good market price and less risk in production.
Good yield of Bangi brings a substantial amount of money for the farmers.
Bangi is a delicious and nutritious fruit. It is generally cultivated in char lands where the scope of cultivating other crops is limited.
Hundreds of farmers in the char areas of Narsingdi Sadar, Raipura and Belabo upazilas have engaged themselves in Bangi cultivation in the vast areas of infertile char lands of Meghna and Arial Kha rivers and they are becoming self-reliant.
The farmers of char villages are used to cultivate Bangi on a commercial basis. With minimum financial involvement, the farmers can harvest Bangi fruit worth about Tk 0.10 million from an acre of land.
Mr Abbas Uddin, deputy director, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), said over 1,000 acres of land had been brought under Bangi cultivation in the three char upazilas of the district. He said many poor farmers had changed their lot by growing Bangi.
Talking to the news agency, farmer Abdul Ali of Alokbali char said Tk 5,000 to 6,000 was needed to cultivate Bangi on one bigha of land. He said in the current year he cultivated four bighas of barren lands beside the Meghna river which cost him only Tk 2500.
He expressed the hope that in the current year he could produce 4,000 to 5,000 pieces of Bangi worth about Tk 0.10 million to 0.12 million from his four bighas of land.
Most of the farmers said Bangi was a profitable fruit. Excessive rain and flood can destroy the lands of the fruit.
