RANGPUR, Mar 11 (BSS): Director General of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) AZM Mamtazul Karim has said that Bangladesh is currently the 9th biggest potato producing country in the world and third biggest in Asia.
"Potato has become a cash crop in Bangladesh where the farmers have been producing the high quality and tasty varieties of potato," he said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a day-long training course Tuesday as the chief guest.
Like last year, Bangladesh is expected to export a large quantity of high quality potato to Russia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Nepal and other countries to earn huge foreign exchange to benefit the nation as well as farmers, he said.
The DAE organised the training course at Burirhat Horticulture Centre under the 'Upazila Level Technology Transfer for Farmers Training (2nd Phase) Project' for the Sub-assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAOs).
While speaking on the occasion, the Director General appreciated DAE officials for properly implementing the directions of Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury in making agricultural activities successful at the field level to increase food output.
He called upon all concerned for working sincerely to increase Boro rice output and inspiring the farmers to combat pests' attacks on Boro crop effectively this season through adoption of natural parching methods.
