NARSINGDI, Apr 20 (BSS): Experts and farmers in Narsingdi expect bumper output of Boro rice this season, as peasants here started harvesting the major crop in parts of the district.

"We had fixed a target of producing 215,000 tonnes of Boro rice from 54,710 hectares of land . . . the production target is likely to exceed as the farmers cultivated the cash crop in 231,000 hectares," Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Narsingdi Abbasuddin told the news agency.

He said a favourable climate paved the way for "excellent growth" of Boro this year while no major incidents of pest attack took place anywhere in the district.

The comments of the official came as peasants began harvesting in all the six upazilas of the district amid much enthusiasm while it was expected to get a momentum from the first week of next month.

Mr Abbasuddin expressed the hope that if there is no climate calamity in the coming few months, the district could witness production of over 250,000 tonnes of Boro this year.

He said that the local DAE provided the farmers with logistic support including seeds and fertilisers and necessary equipment.

Farmers Abdur Rahman, Golam Hossain, Haripad Das and Brijan Roy said they have already completed harvesting their Boro paddy and got excellent production.
