Bumper Haribhanga mango production in Rangpur

RANGPUR, July 4 (BSS): The officials, experts and farmers are expecting bumper production of highly fleshy, fibreless and tasty local variety Haribhanga mango this season as its harvest continues in full swing now with excellent output in the district.
According to sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), production of the mango might cross all previous records following favourable climatic condition and frequent rainfalls during the fruit formation period in last April and May this year.
The frequent rainfalls helped a lot in smooth growth of the tender fruit resulting in the excellent production of the local variety aristocrat mango having huge demand both at home and abroad.
Horticulture specialist of the DAE Khandker Md Mesbahul Islam said commercial cultivation of Haribhanga mango has become popular and expands every year bringing good profit and self-reliance to hundreds of farmers here in recent years.
More than 6,200 farmers and commoners have cultivated the mango in some 4,100 small, medium, big orchards and on the homesteads on over 5,700 hectares of land this season after producing 21,000 tonnes of the fruit last year in the district.
The farmers are expecting to produce about 21,500 tonnes of the mango worth about Tk 1.29 billion alone this season as its cultivation has been expanding all over Rangpur region in recent years.
The mango is largely being cultivated in Podaganj, Zarullapur, Rangatipara, Bangaon, Chaker Pather, Khoragach Purbopara, Khoragach Paschimpara, Ruposhi, Paikarerhat, Rukniganj, Siraj, Tekani, Moyenpur, Kadamtola, Lalpukur, Shukurerhat, Sikarpur, Fulchowki, Tilakpara, Kashimpur, Ucha Balua, Matherhat and other villages in Mithapukur upazila.
Besides, the mango is being cultivated in Nagerhat, Chowpothirhat, Kanchabari, Gopalpur, Baroghoria, Airamri, Kutubpur, Arunnesa, Nataram, Rustamabad, and Mandalpara under Badarganj upazila, Kantabari, Palichora, Ramjiban under Sadar upazila and many villages in other upazilas of the district.
Harvest of the mango began from second week of June and it will continue until end of July. Per kg mango is now selling at Tk 50 to 60 in the local markets, official and market sources said.
Successful farmers Golam Mostafa, Ansar Ali and Bablu Master of Podaganj, Lutfar Rahman of village Paikarerhat, Abdus Salam of Akhirarhat, Jahangir Hossain and Nur Islam of other villages predicted bumper Haribhanga mango production this time.
Harvest of the mango continues in full swing with excellent output now and the produce is being marketed in the local markets and sent to the capital city and other places at comparatively lower rates following massive production this season, they said.
Predicting bumper production of Haribhanga mango this season, Deputy Director of the DAE Zulfiquer Haider said the farmers in the district are being provided with the latest technologies to further boost cultivation of the mango having export potentials.
