Call to enhance fish cultivation for alleviating poverty

RANGPUR, Mar 15 (BSS): Speakers at a ceremony here today stressed the need for bringing all of the abandoned and barren water bodies under enhanced fish cultivation to alleviate poverty as well as achieve economic self-reliance by the poor.
Sadar Upazila Fisheries Office of the Department of Fisheries (DoF) organised the ceremony to launch re-excavation and renovation of the barren Anantoram water body on 10 acres land at Tk 0.6 million (six lakh) in Uttam Baniapara area in the outskirts of the city.
President of city unit of Awami League (AL) Shafiar Rahman Shafi and Sadar upazila chairman Nasima Zaman Bobby jointly inaugurated the re-excavation and renovation works as guests of honour.
Sadar Upazila Fisheries Officer Mahfuzar Rahman presided over the function arranged on the bank of the large water body and a large number of local people, including men and women, were present.
After completion of the re-excavation and renovation works, the local beneficiaries will operate fish farming in the developed water body through bringing it under proper management.
The speakers called upon all concerned for boosting fish cultivation in the water body for achieving economic self-reliance by the rural people, including local fishermen’s community, besides meeting their own nutritional demands.
