KHULNA, Sept 12: Fattening of cattle ahead of Eid-ul-Azha has become popular among the rural people of Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts, as it has proved quite profitable.
According to the sources, about 120,000 people of Dumuria, Terokhada, Chuknagor, Satkhira Sadar, Batiaghat, Rampal, Fakirhat, Mongla and Mollarhat upazilas of the districts have achieved success in the business.
They are now taking special care of their bullocks, calves, cows, oxen, buffaloes and goats so that they can sell their animals in the cattle markets at higher price.
The cattle farmers in the areas earn good profits every year by fattening cattle besides producing milk in their farms.
This year over 0.20 million (two lakh) cattle have been brought for fattening by about 0.10 million farmers in the district.
District Livestock Officer Shamol Kanti Roy said, "Many rural families rear and fatten cows commercially and earn good profits every year."
An official of the Livestock Department seeking anonymity told the FE that the cattle farmers are opting for the system to make their cattle fat rapidly, as the cattle fodders' prices have increased abnormally compared to those in the previous year.
Farmers Abeda Khatun, Sakina Begum, Jobeda, Sabiron, Halima, Sajeda, Julekha, Rasheda, Anju, Minara, Shabana, Mamtaz and Jahura of different villages narrated their success stories in the business.
They are taking special care of their bulls to sell those at rates between Tk 50,000 and Tk 80,000 in the local markets depending on their sizes.
Sharbanu Begum and Sonia Akter said they expect to sell their four healthier bulls at Tk 65,000 each. They bought those two years back at Tk 25,000 each.
Shahajan Gazi and his wife Sakina Khatun of Chuknagar village said they had bought four small sheep last year at Tk 3,000. They expect to sell those during Eid-ul-Azha at Tk 25,000.
Aysha Khatun, Sobiron Bibi and Abul Kashem expect to sell 10 to 12 goats at Tk 60,000 to Tk 75,000. They bought those for Tk 25,000 to Tk 32,000 a year back.
But, most of the farmers are using harmful steroid injection to fatten their cattle rapidly.
Due to use of the banned steroid injection, cattle are being fattened rapidly which is bad for human health.
District Livestock Officer of Khulna told the FE that over 0.10 million high quality cattle have been brought under fattening system in nine upazilas of the districts.
He expressed the hope that the farmers will get good prices of their cattle and make-up some losses they incurred last year following artificial crisis in the local markets.
He, however, urged the consumers to be cautious about the cattle which were administered steroid injection.
