FARIDPUR, May 6 (BSS): Wheat production target set for current season has been achieved in the district.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, wheat was cultivated on 31,510 hectares of land in the district in the current season exceeding the official target of cultivating 26,630 hectares.
The production target of wheat has also been increased from 74, 546 tonnes to 0.10 million tonnes in the district reflecting a sigh of relief for the farmers who incurred losses in the last Aman-Boro season due to low price of their produces.
Loss in Boro paddy prompted the farmers to bring more land under wheat cultivation who have just completed the harvesting of wheat and processing those for marketing.
About 16 to 18 maunds of wheat were produced on one bigha of land this year which brought smile to the gloomy faces of the farmers who were frustrated with the last year's loss in Aman-Boro paddy.
Farmers Nurul Islam Molla, Akir Shaikh and Fela Molla of village Gadadhar Dangi under Aliabad Union Parishad of Sadar Upazila told the news agency that they had to spend about Tk 4000 for cultivating wheat on one bigha of land while the market price of wheat is now minimum Tk 800 per maund.
According to the DAE sources, 22 varieties of wheat seed were distributed among the farmers in the district this year which yielded positive results.
The production target has been achieved due to timely availability of seed, fertiliser, irrigation and pesticides under favourable climatic condition during the current wheat season.
