The price of farm egg is gradually decreasing in the city's kitchen markets following sufficient supply from farm level, industry insiders said.
The demand for eggs increased after Eid-ul-Fitr but the supply flow of egg was not adequate at that time for transportation problem due to continuous heavy rainfall. But recently the supply chains have become smooth.
A 'hali' (4 pieces) of egg was selling between Tk 33 and Tk 35 Sunday which was Tk 34 to Tk 36 last week, according to different kitchen market sources.
Mazharul Alam, a salesman of a retail shop at Mohammadpur said: "We are now buying 100 pieces of egg at a cost of Tk 780 to Tk 790 but last week we bought the same at more than Tk 800 from the wholesalers."
"So we are now selling a 'hali' of egg at Tk 34 and a dozen of egg at Tk 100 although we sold the same at Tk 35 and Tk 105 respectively last week."
Bangladesh Poultry Khamar Rokkha Jatiya Parishad general secretary Khandker Mohammad Mohsin said: "The poultry farmers sold 100 pieces of egg at Tk 640 to Tk 660 to the wholesalers at city's kitchen markets Saturday."
"So per piece of egg costs Tk 6.40 to Tk 6.60 and the retailer should sell a piece of egg between Tk 6.90 and Tk 7.30 adding Tk 0.50 to Tk 0.70 to their buying price. But they are selling the same at Tk 8.25 to Tk 8.75," he said.
Speaking on the supply situation Mr Mohsin said due to rise in demand for eggs from bakeries, restaurants and other consumers after the holy month of Ramadan caused the price hike of egg.
He said both the demand and supply of egg generally decline during Ramadan but these increase after the Eid vacation.
In early August the transportation problem due to heavy rainfall created disruption in egg supply from farm level to city's kitchen markets. But now the supply situation has improved.
The daily demand of farm egg is 27.0 million pieces across the country while its production is 27.3 million to 27.4 million pieces per day, industry people said.
