Fish, veg up as normalcy returns to kitchen mkt

Prices of some vegetables and fish increased on Friday compared to the prices of a week back, retailers said.

Chilli and garlic prices decreased while other commodities prices were static on the day.

Ridge gourd, pointed gourd, sponge gourd, snake gourd, okra, bitter gourd and radish prices increased by Tk5 per kg in last seven days at retails.

Snake gourds was sold at Tk40-45 per kg, pointed gourds at Tk40-45, bitter gourds at Tk60-70 per kg.

Prices of early winter crops like cauliflower and local bean witnessed a slight reduction on the day.

A medium sized cauliflower was sold at Tk 30-35 per piece on the day, which was Tk35-40 seven days back.

Local bean sold at Tk 80-100 per kg, which was Tk100-120 a week back, according to the prices of commodities at Nowabganjbazar, Azimpur, Newmarket, Karwan Bazar and Hatirpool area.

 Abdar Ali, a retailer at Banalata Kitchen Market under Newmarket area said that the prices of some vegetable increased at wholesales by Tk2-3 per kg, which caused the hike.

 Sponge gourds sold at Tk165-170 per palla (5 kg) today (Friday) at Karwan Bazar wholesale market which was Tk140-145 per palla a week back he said.

Md Abdul Latif, president of Karwan Bazar Kanchamal Aratdar Baboshayee Samity, said that prices of summer vegetables are increasing due to plunge in supply.

"Supply of summer variety vegetable is reducing as many of the farmers have started cultivation of winter vegetable in their fields," he said.

He said the prices of winter crops will gradually fall in the coming days.

Prices of river, haor and beel fish increased significantly on Friday compared to that of its previous.

Prices of indigenous varieties like golsha, pabda, tengra, puti, batashi, mola, kajoli witnessed a increase of Tk100-150 per kg in last seven days.  

People have been fed up with consuming meat after the Eid, which pushed up the demand for fish causing price hike, Ramzan Ali, a fish trader at Nowabganjbazar in the older part of the city said.

Garlic was sold at Tk75-80 and Tk80-85 (local) per kg across the city kitchen markets on Friday---a Tk5 reduction in a week.

Chilli prices went down by Tk10-15 and sold at Tk50-70 per kg on the day based on their quality.

However, normalcy finally returned into the kitchen markets on the second weekend (Friday) after the Eid vacation, traders said.
