RANGPUR, Sept 17: The Aman growers affected by the recent flood in the district are apprehensive about achieving the cultivation target of the crop during the current season as they are yet to replant it on their lands owing to scarcity of saplings.
According to sources thousands of hectares of Aman field got damaged by recent flood in different upazilas under the district including Gangachara, Kawnia and Pirgachha upazila. Presently flood water is receding in most of the areas and the flood situation is getting normal. The farmers of the areas are now taking preparation for replanting Aman with new hope and zeal but are facing severe crisis of saplings.
Sources in Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur said flood has entirely damaged crops on about 14,891 hectares of land affecting about 0.1 million (one lakh twenty six thousands) farmers of the district.
Akkas Mia of Purbo Mahipur village in Gangachara upazila said he cultivated Aman paddy on his three bighas of land this year with the hope to earn a good profit but the recent flood destroyed all the plants.
He could manage to collect low quality saplings for replanting Aman but had to pay high rate from a flood free village under Mithapukur upazila, he added.
Many flood affected farmers said they are yet to collect saplings for replanting Aman in their affected fields. They are very much worried about the production of the crop this season, they added.
Deputy Director of DAE Rangpur Zulfikar Haider said they are taking adequate steps to help the affected farmers recover loss. They will begin to distribute Aman saplings among the farmers within two or three days. They have also advised them to cultivate alternative crops in order to recoup the loss, he added.
