SYLHET, Mar 31: Foreign minister AKM Abdul Momen has said this is the best time for investment in Bangadesh.
As Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has ensured a better atmosphere for it, he said, the non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) should come forward to this end.
Although they face some trouble at different stages, things are resolved, especially when the PM takes special initiatives, he noted.
Bangladesh is the best option for NRB investors. We would even have to make changes in laws for NRB investment in all sectors.
"We need investment in all sectors since we are on the development spree", the minister added while speaking as the chief guest at a function at the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) on Saturday evening.
The SCCI organised the event for unveiling a paper on "NRB investment in Sylhet region: An overall review", prepared by Fazle Elahi Md Faisal, assistant professor of Business Studies at the Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST).
Praising the venture the chief guest said it would help in planning investment by the entrepreneurs, especially from among the NRBs. He asked the SCCI to woo the NRB investors to come up for investing in the proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the Sylhet region.
An NRB taskforce has been set up at the PMO while steps have been taken for ending their sufferings at the airports, he added. 24-hour hotline facilities for NRBs have been established on the embassies and high commissions.
Bangladesh Red Crescent Society chairman Hafiz Ahmed Mazumder MP, former chairman of Rupali Bank Ltd. Ahmed Al Kabir, Awami League (AL) Organising Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj, London regional chairman of the British-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry Bashir Ahmed, District AL General Secretary Shofiqur Rahman Chowdhury and SCCI senior vice-president Masud Ahmed Chowdhury also spoke.
SCCI president Khondaker Ahmed in his presidential address stressed better rail links from Sylhet to Dhaka and Chattogram, improving the railways a broadgauge system and adding sufficient AC compartments to the existing trains on the routes.
