Ginger prices see dramatic decline after record spike

FE Report | October 14, 2014 00:00:00

Prices of ginger and most of the vegetables decreased on Monday as transaction got traction after the Eid and Puja vacations, traders said.

Prices of ginger, which witnessed an all time high of Tk 280-350 per kg on Saturday in the capital, showed a significant decline.

Local variety of the spice was sold at Tk180-220 per kg while imported variety (Chinese), which was present at only few shops, was selling at Tk260-300 per kg---Tk50 to 100 reductions just in two days.

A retailer at Nowabganjbazar in the older part of the city said big traders have started to release stored ginger (local variety) at Shyambazar, Karwan Bazar and Rayer Bazar, which are helping to reduce the price of the spice.

He said the supply was good and ginger was traded at Tk160-200 per kg at Shyambazar on Monday morning which was Tk200-220 on Sunday.

However, one of the leading spice importers in the capital Narayan Chandra Saha told the FE on Saturday that the price of China ginger has started to decline and that of the imported variety will reduce in Bangladesh after availability of ginger under new L/Cs (letters of credit).

He also said the price of local variety will be below Tk 130 per kg when new crop hits the market next month (November).

Meanwhile, most of the vegetable prices declined slightly in the last two days.

Prices of brinjal, cucumber, tomato, bitter gourd, snake gourd, sponge gourd, teasle gourd, pointed gourds, ridge gourd, edo (mukhi kochu), cauliflower, radish, carrot and leaf vegetables reduced by Tk4-5 per kg, per piece or per bunch on Monday compared to that of Saturday.

Md Abdul Latif, president of Karwan Bazar Kanchamal Aratdar Baboshayee Samity, an association of vegetable wholesalers in the capital said transaction is normal for the last two days as majority of homegoers have returned to the city after vacation.

He said supply of vegetable increased nearly by four times in the last two days, which led to further reduction in prices.
