Joypurhat farmers eye bumper maize yield

JOYPURHAT, Mar 12 (BSS): Maize farmers in the district are happy as they are going to harvest a bumper yield of the crop in the current season.
Maize cultivation has gained much popularity among the farmers in the district due to its easy cultivation process and lower labour costs.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said a total of 500 hectares of land were brought under the maize cultivation in the district this year with the production target of 4,000 tonnes.
Of the total land, about 100 hectares were brought under the cultivation in Sadar upazila, 300 hectares in Panchbibi upazila and 100 hectares in Akkelpur upazila.
Deputy Director of DAE AZM Sabbir Ebne Zahan said special steps were taken to increase maize production. The steps included motivational activities among the farmers, supply of high yielding variety seeds and extending technical assistance to the farmers.
