Jute cultivation begins in Panchagarh

PANCHAGARH, May 2 (BSS): Jute cultivation started in the district. Cultivation of jute decreased substantially in the district as most the farmers have opted for Boro cultivation. Jute price fluctuates every year and the farmers do not get fair price for their produce.
There is also scarcity of ponds to decompose jute plants properly for extracting fibers. On the other hand, ribbon retting technology in which ribbons are kept under water to decompose jute plants, has not been adopted by the farmers.
Sources in DAE, Panchagarh, said this year jute cultivation has been targeted on 10, 065 hectares and production target is 1, 30, 189 MT of jute. Out of which local variety would be cultivated on 1, 880 hectares to produce 14, 562 MT and Tossa variety on 8, 185 hectares to produce 1, 15, 623 MT jute.
