NAOGAON, Sept 9: Jute growers in Naogaon are happy as the district has witnessed high yield and fair price of the crop this year.
The farmers in the district have got good production as weather was favourable during the cultivation period.
They did not face any problem about rotting and processing the fibre as water bodies contained necessary water in presence of adequate rain.
Sources at Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office said jute was cultivated on 7,860 hectares of land in 11 upazilas of the district this year. The cultivation target, however, was 8,370 hectares.
The growers said depending on the quality, jute was selling at Tk 1,500-1,650 per maund (about 40 kg) in markets of the district.
Among the 11 upazilas in the district, Naogaon Sadar, Badalgachhi and Manda have seen a very good production of the crop in the current season.
Farmer Siraj Ali of Bouddopur village under Manda upazila said this year he got 14 maunds of fibre from his 50 decimals of land. He was also happy over good price of the crop.
District Agricultural Officer Satyabrata Saha informed that farmers have got a good production this season as they received advice on jute cultivation from the DAE office.
Adequate rain and necessary dry weather also helped boost the jute yield in the district, he added.
