Jute purchase begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Aug 10 (BSS): Purchase of jute directly from the farmers has started at Jatiya Jute Mills Purchase Centre at Thanapara of the town amid much enthusiasm.
Chief inspector of jute office here M Mokbul Hossain formally inaugurated the purchase of jute at the centre Sunday as the chief guest.
On the first day, per maund of jute was purchased from the farmers at Tk 1,661. Nurunnabi Mondal of the centre said some 50,000 maunds of jute would be purchased through the centre this year.
The purchase of jute also began at Bamondanga Khalispur Jute Mills under Sundarganj Upazila and Kamarpara UMC Jute Purchase Centre under Sadullapur Upazila in the district, the sources said.
According to Mr Hossain, the growers are happy as they are getting fair price of their crops this year by selling their produce at the centres and local hats and bazars.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 14,250 hectares of land were brought under jute cultivation this year with the production target of 155,618 bales of jute.
