KHULNA, July 24 (BSS): The government has earned Tk 29.21 billion (2,921 crore) through exporting 88.81 tonnes of frozen shrimp white fish from Khulna district in the fiscal year 2021-2022.
Khulna district has produced more than 31,849 tonnes of fish against its demand.
Joydev Pal, District Fisheries Officer (DFO), Khulna, said this while delivering his welcome speech at the inaugural ceremony of the week- long National Fisheries Week-2022 at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in Khulna on Sunday.
Fish production increased significantly in the district after taking multidimensional development and extension programmes for this sector, he said.
Country's fisheries sector was supplying 60 per cent protein and 11 per cent people got involved in the profession, he said. The fisheries sector was also supplying 62.58 grammes fish to each against their demand for 60 grammes.
Khulna City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleqe addressed the function as chief guest while Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna Md Moniruzzaman Talukder chaired it.
Terming shrimp farming and its export as an special component in the country's economy, the chief guest said fish fry were disappearing in the Sundarbans and its adjacent rivers due to netting with poison.
He said developing the fisheries resources, which have immense potential, can significantly strengthen the country's economic base and make the nation self-reliant.
The country's income from exporting fish increased a lot during the last decade, he added.
The fisheries week is held every year to create awareness among the people about the country's fish resources.
In order to protect the endangered species of fish, the government has been running various reservations in different rivers and water-bodies across the country to ensure that the species can breed.
Earlier, KCC Mayor released fish fry in the city's Shaheed Hadis Park pond following a colourful rally brought out from the Park. Fish farmers' association, fishermen's association, frozen foods association and others attended the function.
