Kushtia bidi workers demand tariff cut

Kushtia Bidi Sramik Sangram Parishad staged a demonstration on Wednesday to press for their demand that tariffs on bidi be lowered in the upcoming budget.
Around 1,000 workers took part in the demonstration in front of the Kushtia Public Library in the town, says a press release.
The leaders of the organisation also called for steps to protect the bidi industry from the aggressive tactics of multinational tobacco companies.
After the demonstration, the leaders submitted a memorandum containing the demands to the Prime Minister through the Deputy Commissioner of Kushtia.
General Secretary of Kushtia District Awami League M Azgar Ali attended the programme as the chief guest, while Nazim Uddin, vice-president of Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation, presided over it.
