RAJSHAHI, June 1 (BSS): By virtue of bumper yield, litchi trading worth around Tk 2.5 billion (250 crore) is expected in the region including Ishurdi, famous for litchi production, during this season.
With the onset of the Bangla month of Joistha over two weeks back, commonly known as 'Modhumash' (honey month), the juicy and mouthwatering fruit litchi has appeared in the local markets abundantly.
Many seasonal traders set up makeshift shops at different points especially Shaheb Bazar, Bindurmore, Luxmipur Bazar, Sheroil Bus Terminal, Railway station and Court bazaar displaying the eye-catching fruit. A hundred pieces of litchi are being sold for Tk 200-250.
Available among the varieties of litchi are Bedana, Bombay, China, Mozaffari, Mongolbari, Kadami and BARI - all native to Southeast Asia and produced in Rajshahi and Ishurdi. The farmers have mostly been cultivating the high yielding varieties following repeated bumper production and lucrative price every year.
The growers are now happy following excellent yield and good price of the seasonal fruit. Wholesale traders are now purchasing these varieties from the city's markets and consigning them to different selling points in the capital and other cities for consumers.
