BOGRA, Sept 23: Off-seasonal cucumber cultivation has brought smile in the face of farmers in all twelve upazilas of Bogra district.
The weather condition is favourable and appropriate agri-impute is also provided to them. The products are sold at high price in the local markets.
As a result cucumber cultivation has proved profitable to them within a very short time and at a cheap cost.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources said around 300 hectares of lands in all the upazilas of the district have been brought under cucumber cultivation.
A good number of farmers of the area are producing a large amount of cucumbers using eco-friendly pheromone trap instead of harmful pesticides. They get benefit by using the trap at less cost compared to that of pesticides.
Though the heavy rainfall has hit the cultivation in the district during this season, a considerable quantity of vegetables are already available in the markets, farmers said.
While visiting, this correspondent found that the farmers of the district were passing busy time growing the crops in their lands.
The farmers grow not only cucumber but also different varieties of toxicity-free vegetables including egg plant, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, snake gourd and 'jhinga' in several villages of the district using the trap.
Abdul Haque, a farmer of Delunja village of Adamdighi upazila, said: "I have cultivated the crops on 0.25 acre of land without using any pesticides by spending Tk 2,600 and I expect a profit of Tk 23,400 after meeting my family requirements."
"Local people purchase chemical-free cucumber from the field," he added.
