Major city malls install fake note detectors

The city's most shopping malls installed Monday machines to detect fake currency notes as dozens of money counterfeiting gangs are active ahead of Eid-ul Fitr.
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) with the cooperation of Bangladesh Bank (BB) distributed the machines 'free of cost' to 50 shopping malls in Dhaka. The move of the FBCCI and the BB came after the reported activities of dozens of money counterfeiting groups before the biggest festival of the Muslims.
A total of 50 fake note detecting machines were distributed to the shopping malls at a function held at FBCCI on the day.
Terming the initiative of distributing fake note detecting machines by the FBCCI and BB 'historic' the businessmen said such initiative will help reduce significantly the flow of fake notes to the markets during the Eid-ul- Fitr.
FBCCI President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed said during the occasion of Eid and Puja several currency forgers in the capital become active following shopping spree by the people.
"I hope the menace of fake notes making will reduce significantly following the distribution of fake note detectors," he said.  "We will distribute counterfeit detecting machines to different shopping malls in Chittagong on July 25," Vice- President of FBCCI Md Helal Uddin told the FE Monday.
Asked about the number of machines he said, "Initially, we will distribute 20 machines to the shopping malls in Chittagong".
"We will distribute machines to other main shopping malls in the districts before the upcoming Eid-ul- Fitr," he said.
He called upon the businessmen of the shopping malls to use the machine properly.
Deputy Governor of BB Md Abul Quasem said the price of the fake currency detecting machine is not high. He called upon the businessmen to buy a machine for detecting fake notes. The shopping malls are New Market, Chadnichawak, Jamuna Future Park, Mouchack, Karnaphulin Shopping complex, Twin Tower at Shantinagar and shopping malls at Elephant road and   Uttara areas.
Executive Director (ED) of the central bank Das Gupta Asim Kumar and representatives of different shopping malls, among others, were present. First Vice- President of FBCCI Monowara Hakim Ali gave vote of thanks.
