Nat'l interest to guide decision on foreign operator for NCT

CHATTOGRAM, Apr 19: Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Sunday said the government will prioritise national interest while appointing a foreign operator for the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) at Chittagong Port.
"The government will take a decision on leasing the NCT only after ensuring the country's highest interests are protected," he told a press conference after visiting the NCT-5 jetty at the port.
He said national interest would remain the key consideration in appointing a foreign operator.
Referring to ongoing protests by port workers against the proposed move, the minister said their concerns are being taken into account. "The workers may reconsider their protest if the foreign operator can contribute to the port's economic growth. They will certainly stand for the country's interests," he said.
He noted that any change brings both challenges and opportunities. "Some stakeholders may face losses while others gain opportunities. We are analysing every aspect thoroughly. The workers have legitimate concerns and seek assurance on their rights, which we are considering. At the same time, we must ensure greater national interest," he added.
