The government has undertaken a Tk 16.25 billion (1,625.64 crore) project to preserve and utilize surface water for bringing 74,800 hectares of farmland under irrigation facility, reports BSS.
Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmood disclosed this in the Jatiya Sangsad, while replying to a question from treasury bench member M Abdul Wadud Tuesday.
He said the work on sending a fresh DPP of the 'North-Rajshahi Irrigation Project' with fixing the project cost as per the present rate is under process under instruction of the planning commission.
"The project would bring 74,800 hectares of land under irrigation facility for producing 0.25 million (2.50 lakh) tonnes additional crops," the minister informed the House.
He said that as a result of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasin's sincere efforts (1996-2000) Bangladesh signed a 30-year agreement with Indian government on December 12, 1996 for distribution of the Ganges water at Farakka point during the dry season.
Later, the four-party alliance government did not take any initiatives for proper utilization of the received water from the Ganges River, Mahmood said.
