The government will not allow to import salt this year to ensure that farmers ger "fair" prices, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu said Wednesday, reports BSS.
"We'll not allow import of salt this year to help farmers get fair prices," Amu said at a seminar in the city.
Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) jointly arranged the seminar 'Ensuring Universal Iodised Salt'.
State Minister for Women and Child Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki spoke on the occasion as special guest.
BSCIC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikdar presided over the seminar while director of the project universal iodised salt Abu Taher Khan made introductory remarks.
Director of International Centre for Diarrheal Disease and Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) Dr Tahmid Ahmed and GAIN manager Rezoan Yusuf Ali jointly presented the keynote paper highlighting different aspects of iodised salt.
Additional Industries Secretary M Farhad Uddin, BSCIC director Patit Paban Baiddo and country director of GAIN, Bangladesh, Basanta Kumar Karr took part in the discussion.
The country produced a record 1.75 million tonnes of salt against the target of 1.58 million tonnes during the 2012-13.
Total annual demand for salt in the country stood at 1.58 million tonnes.
At present, around 58 per cent salt is mixed with iodine and 84 per cent families use iodised salt.
