Onion from Myanmar cools Cox's Bazar mkt

COX'S BAZAR, Nov 20: At last prices of onion started to come down as import from Myanmar was continuing and newly-harvested local onion hit the markets.

Onion price fell to Taka 70 to 80 per kg in the markets of Teknaf, Cox's Bazar and adjoining areas on Wednesday.

When visiting markets this correspondent found that imported Myanmar onion was being sold at Tk 110 to 120 instead of Tk 190 to 200 here.

Onion traders said that onion import from Myanmar was increasing day by day and locally produced onion started arriving in the market on Tuesday. So its prices are falling.

Tajul Islam, a wholesale onion trader at Cox's Bazar Boro Bazar said that prices of all onion would fall significantly within next four days and the market would be stable fully next week.

On the other hand, another wholesale trader of the same market Jasim Uddin said that big crowds used to throng the market here to buy onion a few day ago. But now a few buyers come here.

Onion import from Myanmar through Teknaf land port remained stable and 2,100 tonnes of onion arrived in Teknaf from Myanmar in last three days.

According to port sources, a total of 13,632 tonnes of onion were imported from Myanmar in the current month until Wednesday.
