RAJSHAHI, July 5 (BSS): Rajshahi district has attained surplus fish production in the last couple of years due mainly to efforts of different authorities, according to officials.
After meeting the gradually increasing local demand, the district has been supplying at least 100 trucks of fish to different districts including the capital Dhaka every day.
District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani told the news agency that around 66,882 tonnes of fishes were harvested from 48,678 open and closed water bodies in 2014 against the demand of 51,151 tonnes. In 2013, the district produced 61,768 tonnes.
In the current year, the fish production target was set at 70,084 tonnes and the target is expected to be achieved.
There are 47,984 ponds measuring 10,716 hectares and 694 open water bodies including canal, beel, river and floodplain.
"Through various interventions, we are addressing the problems being faced by the growers to make the fish farming activities more attractive and profitable," Mr Rabbani added.
The special credit programme of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (Rakub) for boosting fish production has gained momentum in the country's northwest region for the last couple of years.
The bank has been operating the special loan programme styled "Rakub Fisheries Village" for extensive fish cultivation in the northwest region of the country.
The main objective of the programme is to encourage small farmers in fish farming so that they could produce more fish in the small ponds and other water-bodies using modern and scientific technologies instead of traditional ones.
The programme has given emphasis on forming fisheries villages with at least 10 to 12 small ponds at potential places.
