Self-reliance in fish during tenure of govt

RANGPUR, Sept 14 (BSS): The present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken massive steps for increasing fish production to achieve complete self-reliance on fish within its current tenure.

Fisheries experts said this at a ceremony organised by Pirganj Upazila Fisheries Department in Shahapur village in the upazila on Sunday afternoon for releasing carp variety fish fry into a pond.

With Pirganj Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Barun Chandra Biswas in the chair, Panel Chairman of Pirganj upazila parishad Monayem Sarker Manu attended the ceremony as the chief guest and released fish fry in the pond water.

District Fisheries Officer Dr Zillur Rahman, Upazila Secondary Education Officer Mahtab Hossain, Agriculture Extension Officer Ekhlas Hossain Sarker, Shanerhat union parishad Chairman Mezbahur Rahman addressed the ceremony as special guests.

The fish fry were released under a comprehensive fingerling releasing programme of the Upazila Fisheries Department to the water bodies, including flood plains, submerged rice fields, ponds and 'beels' in the upazila for boosting fish production.

The fisheries experts said the government has been distributing free fish fry among fishermen and farmers through different departments and organisations to enhance fish production for improving rural livelihoods through cutting poverty.
