Prices of imported garlic increased on the spike in costs of import from China in the last two weeks, traders said.
"The price of imported garlic increased by around $ 50 to $ 60 per tonne in the last two weeks," Abul Kalam Azad, a garlic importer at Shyambazar, told the FE on Thursday.
He said the prices of imported garlic increased to $ 820 to $ 850 per tonne now from $ 770 to $ 790 per tonne two weeks back, depending on the varieties of the produce.
Mr Azad said the price of imported garlic was still higher as the Chinese exporters were stockpiling the produce.
"The imported garlic was sold at prices ranging between Tk 70 and Tk 72 per kg in the city's wholesale markets on Thursday against Tk 65 to Tk 68 two weeks back," said Narayan Saha, a wholesaler at Shyambazar.
He said the prices of garlic imported from China increased by around Tk 4 to Tk 5 per kg in the wholesale markets over the last two weeks.
A retailer at Mohammadpur in the city, Majharul Alam, said the price of a kilo of garlic imported from China was selling at around Tk 90, up from around Tk 80 to Tk 85 last week in the kitchen market as retailers had to buy the produce at a higher rate from the wholesalers.
