Sustainable animal farming expansion important

RAJSHAHI, Aug 1 (BSS): The field level officials of Fisheries and Animal Resources ministry and other dairy and poultry farmers have been requested to boost the livestock sector.

State Minister for Fisheries and Animal Resources Narayan Chandra Chanda, MP, made the request while addressing the "Second Livestock Award Presentation and Annual Conference and Livestock-Poultry Fair-2015" held at the Rajshahi University (RU) today as the chief guest.

He told the function that there is no alternative to elevate the sector, as the contribution of the sector is immense in terms of meeting the protein deficiency and for socio-economic development of the country.

The state minister said substantial and sustainable expansion of animal resource farming is very important for meeting the existing protein deficiency along with cutting the poverty rate in the region.

Unemployment problem in the rural areas could be reduced to a greater extent through making the dairy farming popular at grassroots level, he observed.

Moreover, the dairy sector, having vast prospects, can bring about a revolutionary change in the socioeconomic condition of the poor by alleviating poverty, he added.

The Bangladesh Livestock Society (BLS) organised the event with the main thrust of devising ways and means on how to expedite the activities of the promising sector.

BLS President Prof Dr Jalaluddin Sarder presided over the discussion.

Among others, RU Pro Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, Director General of Directorate of Animal Resources Ajoy Kumar Roy, Executive Director of ACI Agri Business Limited Dr FH Ansary and Prof Syed Shah Alam from Kebangsan University in Malaysia spoke at the discussion.

Former VC of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University Prof Mahfuzul Bari presented a keynote paper titled "Environment Protection and Sustainable Development".
