SYLHET, Sept 12: The local food department has so far procured 7,148 tonnes of Boro paddy against the target of 8,912 tonnes in Sylhet division.
However, the procurement time has been extended until September 30, the official sources said today.
Starting from May 31, the countrywide drive was earlier set to continue until August 31.
The target of procuring 5,976 tonnes of boiled rice in the division has already been achieved while 11,255 tonnes of Atap rice has so far been collected against a target of 15,140 tonnes.
When contacted, an official in the Regional food office of Sylhet division told this correspondent Friday that the food officials bought paddy from the farmers and small traders while the rice were supplied by the listed millers of four districts.
Of the total, the highest 3,902 tonnes of paddy was procured from Sunamganj district against the target of 4,266 tonnes while the target of 867 tonnes of boiled rice has already been fulfilled.
A total 6,102 tonnes of 'Atap' rice were collected so far against the target of 7,571 tonnes in the district.
In Habiganj, 1,200 tonnes of Boro paddy were collected against the target of 2,151 tonnes while the target of collection 2,961 tonnes of boiled rice has already been achieved.
Besides, 2,080 tonnes of 'Atap' rice were procured in the district against the target of 2,721 tonnes.
In Moulvibazar district, the targets of procuring 1,019 tonnes of paddy, 867 tonnes of boiled rice and 678 tonnes of 'Atap' rice has already been achieved.
A BSS report from Chuadanga adds: The procurement of Boro rice for the current season in all the four upazilas of the district is going on in full swing.
According to the district food department sources, the rice procurement drive began on June 1 and will be concluded on September 30.
A total of 6,168 tonnes of rice has been procured from the upazilas until September 10.
Of the amount, 1,809 tonnes have been procured from Sadar Upazila, 1,199 tonnes from Alamdanga Upazila, 497 tonnes from Damurhuda Upazila and 2,663 tonnes from Jibannagar Upazila.
The food department has fixed a target of procuring 6,194 tonnes of rice in the current season. Rice procurement from Sadar Upazila and Damurhuda Upazila has been completed.
