FE Report
State Minister for Textiles and Jute Mirza Azam urged Thailand to allow duty free market access of Bangladeshi jute products to that country for reducing trade gape between the two countries.
He made this appeal during his meeting with the deputy minister for commerce Apiradi Tantraporn and the deputy minister for finance of Thailand Wisudhi Srisuphan in Bangkok on June 4 last.
Mr. Azam highlighted the priority being accorded by the Bangladesh government for the promotion of environment- friendly jute and jute products nationally and globally.
He said thousands of workers are currently employed in Bangladesh's jute mills. He encouraged Thai leaders to use jute sacks instead of poly bags for storage of rice and other crops.
He attended a business network dinner organised by the president of Thai-Bangladesh Business Council in Bangkok participated by more than 30 different business and trade bodies' leaders dealing with jute, rice, textiles, infrastructure and electronics industry.
Bangladesh jute and textiles products were showcased in the meeting.
The state minister for jute also called upon the Thai investors to buy off public sector jute and textiles industry in Bangladesh and invest in modernising the jute mills for the production of 100 per cent export-oriented consumer- friendly modern jute products of international standards.
Thailand has recently declared DFQF for products from LDCs for more than 6690 items; however, jute bags are not included in the list.
