Fertiliser factories under Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) have produced 1.06 million tonnes of urea fertilisers in the last fiscal year, up by 0.13 million tonnes than that of the previous fiscal, officials said.

According to them, production has increased as Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory started its operation last year while Jamuna Fertiliser Company Ltd also continued to produce urea fertiliser smoothly.

Officials said along with the production of the two factories, some other factors including proper maintenance, intensive monitoring and sincere efforts by the workers have helped boost the production.

According to official data, the factories under BCIC produced 1.06 million tonnes of urea fertilisers in the FY 2015-16 while it was 0.876 million tonnes in the FY 2014-15.

Production by the factories under BCIC was 0.838 million tonnes in the FY 2013-14 while 1.027 million tonnes in the FY 2012-13 and 0.934 million tonnes in the FY 2011-12.

Seeking anonymity, a BCIC official said the amount of annual production actually depends on the operation of the number of companies. "Year-to-year production fluctuates as it depends on how many fertiliser companies are in production," he added.

"Acute crisis of natural gas is one of the main causes for the closure of other fertiliser companies under BCIC," he said.

However, the factories produced half of the annual target set by BCIC which was one-third of the country's total demand.

Now urea fertiliser production target fixed by BCIC is around 2.1 million tonnes per year and the country's total demand is around 2.7 million tonnes.
