MAGURA, Sept 10: Winter vegetable cultivation is facing set back in the district this year due to waterlogging and seed crisis.
Now it is high time to cultivate winter vegetables. But the cultivation is being hampered in the district.
About 20 thousand people of the district are depended on winter vegetables cultivation for their livelihood.
In this situation they are in deep anxiety
Magura has a good name in producing winter vegetable.
Agriculture Extension Department (DAE) of Magura has taken an scheme to bring 3833 hectares of land under winter vegetable cultivation this season.
But so far only 120 hectares of land has brought under winter vegetables cultivation.
Most of the cultivable lands in Lakshikandar, Ramnagar ,Krishanapur and Kachundi are still waterlogged.
When contacted , Nirupada Shikder a vegetable farmer of village Ramnagar under Magura sadar upazilla told , winter vegetable is main crop for the farmers of this village.
I took a plan to bring two bigha of my land under cauliflower cultivation this season. But I am yet to do so as seeds are being sold at high price. Moreover my land is still under water.
Another farmer Deblal of Krinshnapur under Magura sadar upazilla told, about 50 farmers of our village are dependent on winter vegetables cultivation for their livelihood. But most of them are yet to start cultivation as their lands are still waterlogged.
Abdul Alim a vegetable farmer of village Kachundi under Magura sadar upazilla told, every year at least 70 farmers of our village cultivate winter vegetables.
At the same time at least 10 farmer produce vegetable seeds. We collect seeds from the local farmers. But this season seed is not available in the village as seed production was hampered due to adverse weather.
Seeds are also being sold in the local market but villegers are reluctant to collect these seeds, as the seeds are of low quality, said a farmer.
When contacted Magura DAE official Noabul Alam told this correspondent due to heavy rainfall cultivable land in the district are facing water logging.
But farmers need not to be worried as weather is improving and water is getting exhausted from land.
