Japan will donate US$ 243,885 to implement two agricultural development projects in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) area aiming at building capacity and creating marketing facilities of tribal farmers.
Integrated Development Foundation (IDF) will receive $ 121,946 and Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB) $ 121,939 to implement the projects in the CHT area.
Japanese Ambassador in Bangladesh Shiro Sadoshima signed the grant contract with the heads of the two organisations - Zahirul Alam, Executive Director of IDF and Executive Director of CCDB, Joyanta Adhikari.
Both grant allocations are made from the scheme of Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) of the Japanese government.
According to the Japanese Embassy, IDF will construct an agro-based vocational training centre equipped with demonstration farms in Matiranga of Khagrachhari district and organise applied trainings for the local farmers covering a range of livestock rearing, fish farming, horticulture, growing spices etc.
The CCDB will construct a food processing centre in Bandarban which is to process fresh fruits (banana, mango, tamarind, lime, pineapple and olive) and horticulture products (ginger and turmeric) grown by tribal farmers to further develop their marketing. The lead tribal growers will be engaged in part/full time food processing in this project.
