The Ministry of Jute and Textile (MoJT) has started distributing 422.4 tonnes of jute seeds of high-yielding varieties (HYV) among 0.2 million (2 lakh) farmers this season aiming to boost jute production in the country.
Each of the farmers, selected from 200 upazilas in 44 districts, will receive 2.112kg 'Tosha' jute seeds, codenamed 'O-9897' and 'O-72' free of cost, said a press release of the MoJT on Thursday.
The Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) innovated these two HYV-jute varieties.
393.4 tonnes of O-9897 and 29 tonnes of O-72 seeds will be distributed among 1,000 jute farmers in each upazila.
The MoJT is providing the seeds under a project titled "High Yielding Jute and Jute Seed Production and Improved Jute Retting."
In the meantime, the seeds were sent to all those upazilas of the country and the relevant upazila committees started its distribution among the farmers, said the news release.
The farmers were also requested to communicate with their respective upazila jute development officials for the HYV-seeds.
With the allocated 422.4 tonnes of seeds, the farmers will be able to cultivate jute on around 181,677 acres of land and its acreage is 30-35 maunds.
A packet of 775 gram seeds might cover one bigha (33 decimals) of land.
The current market price of the allocated jute seeds is around Tk 30 million (3 crore).
