The 10th International Plastic Fair 2015 will begin in the city tomorrow (January 27) with especial focus on the recycling of plastic goods in the country.
The four-day-long fair, jointly organised by the Bangladesh Plastic Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BPGMEA) and Chan Chao International Co Ltd of Taiwan, will be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).
An announcement to this effect came at a press conference on Sunday at the BPGMEA office in the city.
"The fair is going to provide an opportunity to the plastic industry people to show the quality of their products and their production capacity to international buyers and partners", BPGMEA president Jasim Uddin told the press conference.
He said Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed will inaugurate the fair as the chief guest and State Minister for Finance MA Mannan and president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed will be special guests.
Mr Jashim said this year they have been focusing on recycling of plastic products as they have immense potential to earn foreign currency.
He said at the fair the local and international participants will show their products including household items, packaging materials, plastic moulds, toy items, pharmaceutical items, plastic furniture, melamine items, garment accessories, packaging machine, flexography printing machine and plastic bag making machine.
He said the plastic sector is passing a critical period due to the countrywide blockade over the last 20 days and the sector has counted more than Tk 2.40 billion in losses so far.
He said in recent days the sector cannot utilise more than 30 per cent of its production capacity due to failure in raw materials transportation.
According to BPGMEA, over 350 local and international companies including those from China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE and the United Kingdom are going to take part in the fair.
At present there are about 5,000 plastic units in the country of which 1,500 are large and medium-sized while 3,500 are small, BPGMEA data shows.
Of the plastic factories, 60 per cent are located in Dhaka while 25 per cent in Chittagong, 8 per cent in Narayanganj and 7 per cent in Khulna, Comilla, Bogra and Rajshahi.
