The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday lodged a case against 11 people, including eight engineers of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), over embezzlement of Tk 344.15 million from a river irrigation project.
The accused BWDB officials, in collusion with contractors, paid a bill of Tk 548.32 million to Sigma Engineers Limited to install eight pumps at Kashimpur Pump House under Monu River Irrigation Project in Moulvibazar district.
However, during the investigation, the ACC found that the actual price of the eight pumps were Tk 204.17 million, which means the accused misappropriated the remaining Tk 344.15 million, ACC spokesperson Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee told the FE.
The accused are Sigma Engineers Limited Managing Director Syed Md Kamal, Chairman Syed Arshad Reza and General Manager Abdus Salam, BWDB Chief Engineer (Mechanical Equipment Department) Chowdhury Nazmul Alam, Superintendent Engineer (Pabna Circle) SM Shahidul Islam, Executive Engineer (Dhaka Pump House) Anisur Rahman, Superintendent Engineer (Dhaka Central Mechanical Circle) Abu Taleb, Superintendent Engineer M Golam Sarwar, Executive Engineer (Design Circle-3) Md Abbas Ali, Superintendent Engineer (Design Circle-1) Abdul Basit, and Executive Engineer (Chandpur Mechanical Sub-division) Ruhul Amin.
