Adoption of green tech \\\'urgent need for Bangladesh\\\'

FE report | March 11, 2014 00:00:00

Adoption of a lot of green technology is an urgent need for Bangladesh to achieve net zero carbon emission for facing the consequences of climate changes.

Despite being at risk of the downstream location Bangladesh is yet to take effective measures that would save the low-lying coastal lands from increasing water level of the sea.

The above observations were made by Mathews Vincent, the keynote speaker, at a press conference held in the city Monday on a three-day trade show and commercial summit on power, solar energy and green building beginning tomorrow (March 12).

The show titled 3rd International Green Build, 4th International Powertech and 5th International Solartech will be jointly organised by Exponet Exhibition (Pvt) Limited of Bangladesh and the Greenleaf Green Solutions of India at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city.

The expo will be open for all and continue until March 14.

Mr Vincent said some 75 exhibiting companies from ten countries including Bangladesh would display over 300 branded solar and green technology-based products in 130 stalls.

He said different companies from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, UAE, UK, China, USA and Korea will showcase their environment-friendly green technological products in the exhibition.

On the closing day a business summit on green trade and investment will be held with the contribution of notable specialists and experts of sectors concerned at home and abroad.

Senior adviser of Sustainable Energy for Development of the GIZ Dr Engr Khursheed-Ul-Islam was one of the speakers at the press conference. A sum of Tk 2.0 billion refinancing fund has been created by the central bank for green energy, thanks to some government's positive steps taken in this connection.

He, however, said there is no initiative either from the central bank or the private entrepreneurs to utilise the fund for generating green power.

Mr Islam said Bangladesh's achievement in adopting renewable energy is praiseworthy as it is the fastest solar home system (SHS) installing state in the world.

He said currently Bangladesh is on way to installing 3.0 million SHSs in the off-grid coastal zones.

Minister for Housing and Public Works Engr Mosharraf Hossain MP is expected to inaugurate the exposition while State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid MP to be the chief guest on the closing day.

Other speakers at the press conference said the expo will create an opportunity to establish cross-border trade relations, face to face contact between business people and sharing knowledge.

They also said the show would help to standardise the products, modernise business and improve supply chain management.

The speakers said the Green Summit will open a new era for the academics, businessmen, service holders, engineers, technologists and researchers to share and learn the latest technologies invented and evolved by the world's big firms.
