Airtel sees subscriber fall in May

Airtel Bangladesh, the country's fourth largest mobile phone operator, witnessed a significant fall in its subscriber base last month, according to the latest data of the telecom regulator.
The operator lost around 12,000 customers in a month, as its total clientele were 8.503 million in April, which declined to 8.491 million in May.
Apart from Airtel, rest of the local mobile phone operators, including the state-owned Teletalk, added new subscribers to their network in the month.
Grameenphone (GP) was in the leading position by adding 241,000 new subscribers in May, followed by Teletalk that added 183,000 customers.
With the new customers, the subscriber base of Teletalk reached 3.525 million, which was 3.342 million in April.
Other operators - Banglalink, Robi and Citycell - also added new customers.
According to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the total number of subscribers of the six mobile phone operators reached 116.239 million in May, which was 115.627 million one month ago.
According to the industry insiders, various attractive offers and tariff cuts by the mobile phone operators are contributing a lot to increase their subscribers.
According to the BTRC data, GP had 49.088 million subscribers till May, which was 48.847 million in April.
Banglalink maintained its second position with 29.626 million subscribers, which was 29.449 million in April.
The number of subscribers of the third market leader - Axiata Bangladesh (Robi) - reached 24.077 million, which was 24.062 million in April.
The data showed that Pacific Bangladesh Telecom (Citycell) gained around 8,000 new users in May. Its subscriber base was 1.425 million in April, which reached 1.433 million till May.
