Allocation of rice, atta for OMS may be increased

The ministry of food (MoF) is likely to increase the present allocation of rice and atta (flour) under Open Market Sale (OMS) programme in the capital following high demand of the items, a high official said.

Earlier, Chief Controller of Dhaka Rationing proposed to the food department for increasing the present allocation of rice and atta (flour) for OMS programme.

"We sent a letter to the Directorate General of Food for increasing daily allocation of rice and atta under OMS programme following high demand among the consumers in the capital," Sukumar Chandra Roy, chief controller of Dhaka Rationing told the FE.  

The government has introduced OMS programme as part of its commitment to provide food at subsidised rate to the marginalised people.  The programme has got tremendous response from the people especially lower income group.

At present coarse variety of rice is being sold between Tk 33- Tk 34 in retail market that attracted more consumers of lower income group to buy it from OMS.

The official said the department of food will now forward the letter to the ministry of food for approval.  

He said that in the capital the daily allocation of rice is 160 tonnes and atta (flour) 80 tonnes that are being sold through 78 trucks and two shop dealers under OMS programme.    

He said except Saturday, rice and atta are being sold from 9 am to 5 pm throughout the week. OMS programme is also going on at all the districts.

The official said if there are nine wards in a district then there will be nine dealers and each of them (dealers) will get one tonne of rice and one tonne of atta for sale.

Similarly if there are 12 wards in a district then there will be similar number of dealers. And each of them will get one tonne of rice and one tonne of atta.

At present per kg of rice is being sold at Tk 24 while atta (flour) at Tk 22 under OMS programme.

Each of the consumers can purchase five kg rice and five kg atta separately. Price of per kg rice has been fixed at Tk 24 while atta at Tk 22.
