RAJSHAHI, May 21 (BSS): Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu, MP, has said the present government is committed to protecting the sugar industries.
A large number of people both in farming and industry are involved in this sector, he said.
He said the government has been working relentlessly to bring diversification like power generation and distillery in the country's sugar industries as it cannot survive depending on the sugar production alone.
Amir Hossain said the farmers, mills staffs and labourers should take the responsibilities of supplementing the government efforts.
The minister was addressing a mass-gathering of sugar mills staffs, labourers and sugarcane farmers on the Rajshahi Sugar Mills' premises as the chief guest. AKM Delwar Hossain, chairman-in-charge of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC), was in the chair.
Bangladesh Sugarcane Farmers' Federation organised the event.
State minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam, MP, former mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Ayen Uddin, MP, Akter Jahan, MP, and former state minister Prof Zinatun Nessa Talukder also spoke.
He directed the authorities to take prudent steps to make the state-owned sugar mills profitable. He also asked them to take measures for product diversification to save the traditional industries like sugar mills.
Mr Amu said new measures have to be taken considering various policies and programmes initiated from 1996 to 2001 to make the BSFIC profitable.
