A two-day income tax fair began at the Sena Malancha Convention Hall in the city on Wednesday, aiming to facilitate tax-related services for the members of the armed forces.
The second edition of the event titled 'Armed Forces Income Tax Fair-2018' is expected to play a vital role in promoting an income tax culture.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Tax Zone 9, Dhaka, and the Armed Forces Division (AFD) jointly organised the event.
Adjutant General of Bangladesh Army Major General Mohammad Humayun Kabir inaugurated the fair as the chief guest.
NBR Member (Tax administration and human resources management) Ziauddin Mahmud attended the opening ceremony as special guest, with Commissioner of Tax Zone-9, Dhaka, Mahmudur Rahman in the chair.
Speaking on the occasion, Major General Mohammad Humayun Kabir said income tax given by eligible people is vital for the country's economic development.
The fair will help members of the armed forces avail various tax-related services easily, he said.
He also requested the NBR to make the tax return process easier.
In his speech, NBR Member Ziauddin Mahmud said there is no alternative to collecting taxes for running a country's economy.
Highlighting the need for a strong tax culture, he said tax evasion is considered to be a sin in some developed countries.
Mr Mahmudur Rahman said paying income tax is essential for protecting the country's economy, similar to the way the armed forces protect the country's sovereignty.
"Income tax payment is also important for ensuring good governance and accountability," he said.
About the fair, he said taxmen are offering various tax-related services, including Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) registration, return submission and consultancy at one place.
Besides the NBR, Sonali Bank and Trust Bank set up booths at the fair venue to facilitate financial transactions.
Earlier, the NBR organised week-long national income tax fair at 166 venues across the country from November 13 to 19.
