Balla land port to be modernised to boost export-import

HABIGANJ, Feb 28 (BSS): Balla land port would be developed to facilitate the export-import activities with India.

To this end, teams of both the countries visited the infrastructure facilities and roads of the land port Saturday.

The visit was part of the modernisation process, which was decided in the meeting of the two countries held at Agartala on February 3.

Habiganj Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Joynal Abedin led the Bangladesh side while N Darlong, District Magistrate of Khoyai, led the Indian team.

During the visit, they decided to build road at Kedarakote area rather than constructing bridge on the Khoyai river.

Bangladesh will construct warehouse at Kedarakote area while India will set up it at Teliamura area.

Bangladesh exports cement, brick, stone, fish and other goods through the port while different kinds of raw materials, fruits, bamboo, chocolate, candy etc are being imported from India.

Police Super Joydeb Kumar Bhadra, BGB 55 Battalion Commander Lt Col Sajjad, additional DC (revenue) Shafiul Alam, Additional District Magistrate Shahina Ferdousee, Chunarughat UNO Mashudul Kabir, ASP Sajjad Ibne Rayhan, Chunarughat Thana OC Amulya Kumar and Gazipur UP chairman Maulana Tajul Islam were in the Bangladesh team.

The Indian team included Khoyai Police Super Ratiranjan Debnath, BSF Teliamura Camp Vice-captain Beerendra Bajpeye, DC Staff R N Das, SDPO Joyatisman Dev Chowdhury and Sub-divisional Magistrate Dr Samit Roy Chowdhury.

The Balla port situated 18km south of Chunarughat upazila headquarters was established in 1951.
