Bangladesh ready to join Energy Charter: Nasrul

Bangladesh intends to join the International Energy Charter soon aiming to strengthen energy cooperation with the signatory states.

State Minister for the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) Nasrul Hamid on Sunday said Bangladesh was completing all necessary formalities to become a member of the International Energy Charter.

Nasrul disclosed the information when Energy Charter General Secretary Dr Urban Rusnak paid a courtesy call on him on the sideline of the inaugural session of the eighth conference of International Renewable Energy (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, a senior MPEMR official said.

Bangladesh is completing necessary formalities to join the charter, the official quoted the state minister as saying.

Bangladesh is expected to get cooperation in different energy sector issues and businesses like energy conservation, investment, arbitration, sharing experience with member states and attaining green fund, he said. Knowledge centre coordinator of the Energy Charter Dr Marat Terterov and Bangladesh's Ambassador in the UAE Muhammad Imran were also present during the meeting.
