Bangladesh tea production at historic high in 2021

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 20: Tea gardens of the country produced around 96.5 million kg of tea in 2021, the highest in 168 years of commercial production.

According to the officials of Bangladesh Tea Board (BTB), there are a total of 168 tea gardens in Bangladesh. Of these, 136 tea gardens are in greater Sylhet, 21 in Chattogram, 08 in Panchagarh, 02 in Rangamati and 01 in Thakurgaon.

The production of tea was 86.3 million kg from January to December in 2020.

The production in 2021 was still higher compared to the previous record of 96 million kg in 2019.

From January to December in 2018, the tea gardens of the country produced around 90.45 million kg of tea.

The Tea Board informed the demand for tea was 86 million kg in 2017 but the country produced almost 79 million kg.

Dr Nazneen Kawsar Chowdhry, member of BTB, said that the production of tea increased last year significantly mainly due to good weather and care of garden owners.

Chairman of Bangladesh Tea Association, Chattogram Branch Shah Alam said, "The weather of the country last year supported the tea production. As a result, the production increased remarkably."
